Thaddeus Stevens. Pennsylvania congressman, 1849 to 1868. Radical Republican. One of the most uncompromising abolitionists in American political history. He pushed the 13th Amendment over the finish line, fought hard for Reconstruction, and spent most of his career being right before it was comfortable. If the name doesn't ring a bell, Tommy Lee Jones played him in Lincoln.
